As someone who has a love/have relationship with fight scenes--give me a whole army to send here and there and I'm fine, give me anything smaller and I'm strangely in trouble haha--this was an awesome article. I always walk my scenes out and take notes but the leftover 7 year old in me went !!!! At the thought of using Lego figurines and a battle map and considering my Lego people have access to way better weapons than me, I'm trying this out next time.
The small fights often call for more detail than the big battles, which involve more great sweeping maneuvers and occasional flashes into smaller skirmishes, so I think it makes a lot of sense to have some trouble there.
I asked about writing interesting battle scenes in a Note and then I went to the internet and found you had linked this, um, some place. Anywho, I don’t have problems with blocking out a fight scene (oooh, look at that one year in Drama back in uni rising up), but I do have problems making it … interesting. So I will see if I answering your questions help in that regard.
for the fake weapon part I actually use a few nice sized sticks that I have carved down to be a nice sized sword. I have three, my main one, my back up one, and my back up back up one. (my siblings have thrown out my swords before.) I also have a stash of not yet finished sticks in case I can't find any of my swords. and for smaller weapons I make them using my 3D pen.
You are not alone and I support you getting yourself a sword prop for increased accuracy, which I assume you want to do because who doesn't want a sword??
